The Guru as our Sustainer

The Guru as our Sustainer

by MSS Guru Raj Kaur Khalsa, Vancouver, Canada
2026 (Third Quarter)

“Beloved God, you are the support of my breath of life.”

– Words of Guru Arjun Dev ji.

My guess is that every Sikh of the Guru can say “the Guru is my Sustainer.” It is expressed in many different ways, manifesting in so many ways. For me, it is a constant understanding of the Reality that from time to time manifests as what is commonly called “it’s a miracle!” But I don’t think it is “a miracle.” Rather, I experience these moments as a time when the Guru lifts the veil of illusion for a moment so that I can see that the Guru is always working, holding the Reality, His Hand on my head. It is like a Universal Wink…. Hi I am here! Working non-stop. Wink, wink!

No doubt at all that we all have these “miracle” moments, I will share a couple of mine with you.

Miracle Moments

Hari Singh, my husband, went through throat cancer several years ago. He is fine now. He was scheduled for radiation (after his chemotherapy course). His doctor told him he would need to shave his beard in order to create the cage-like thing for the radiation, which could not be even a millimeter off. Oh my, I anxiously awaited what he would reply! I would support whatever he decided—medical procedures are very personal. His answer was: “No way I am cutting my beard.” So, there it was. My prayers started: “Hey Guru Gobind Singh ji, need your help. You have to cover the millimeter!!!” My inner prayer was at work.

“I place before you the condition of my soul.”

– Words of Guru Arjun Dev ji

The fateful day arrived when he had to have his cage-thing created. In the waiting room, suddenly I hear: “Guru Raj Kaur ji. It’s me. Remember me from (I don’t remember where) about 40 years ago, when you came to our city to teach the children and do kirtan!” This beautiful young man, full turban etc, was on Hari Singh’s  treatment team!  It was like seeing the Guru’s very roop! “You look the same, Guru Raj Kaur Ji.” (LOL—the Radiant Body of Guru Gobind Singh). I felt the Guru’s Hand in that moment. So we go in and I am ready to go, in defensive mode, knowing the Guru was with us…. When we tell the nurse doing the fitting that he won’t cut his beard, she said, “Oh no problem, dear. We had a lovely Sikh gentleman in last week and it worked out just fine.” “Oh!!!” Thank you Guru Gobind Singh ji!

Another “miracle moment” was more humorous than the seriousness of Hari Singh’s adventure! In fact, I felt it was the Guru toying with me! We used to drive down from Vancouver to Summer Solstice every year. This particular year, I wanted to start a Sahej Paath and was wondering if there was a way to accomplish this without finding prakash of the Guru, I used to travel a lot in those days. Surely the Guru exists everywhere. Well, we were driving through Oregon, wanting to stay at a particular hotel. They were all booked, so we got on the main road where motels were plentiful. I chose one at random. When we checked in, we discovered the owners were from our neck of the woods, outside Vancouver, in Surrey, B.C. We were delighted! She said, “We can put you next to Babaji.” “Oh,” I thought, “how nice.” I thought it was her elderly father or someone. To my absolute shock, the room had been converted into a “Babaji” room, for Guru’s Prakash!! Oh my God! Message from the Divine: the Shabad Guru lives everywhere. Since then my Sacred iPad holds the Shabad Guru for my Sahej Paaths! Wink, Wink!

Okay, here is the most impactful one of my life. (But warning: it is very personal.) I received a request from SS Sada Anand Singh ji of Japan (our so very dear brother, now deceased), to help them with an Akhand Paath in honor of the inauguration of the Gurdwara in their ashram. Also, the Akahand Path honored that his wife was pregnant and was held to bless the child—Siri Amrita Kaur. Well, sure. It was a lovely time! Yet I recognized very quickly that in fact the Guru had guided me here—10,000 kilometers away—for my own bowing, my own healing. I had recently lost a child. Some personal work needed to be done. What better place. But the best was still to come: Sada Anand Singh ji had told me their ashram was in a beautiful location on a hill with “the temple.” So we went for a walk. There were lines of little altars with stuffed animals and other little childrens’ items. What?? SS ji explained that this is where women come to offer their prayers for lost children, miscarriages, abortions, etc. To make their peace! Oh My God. Thank you. Wink, Wink!

“Seeing your Lotus Feet, O Nanak, I am at peace.”

-Words of Guru Arjun Dev ji
