by SS Gurudev Singh Khalsa, Austin TX Summer 2016 The ability to experience our physical body has served us well throughout our long history of evolution, and has been instrumental to our survival. It tells the story of what we can see, touch and feel with our five senses. Millennia ago, a long lineage of seers—rishis, yogis, saints, philosophers—began exploring the unseen, hidden part of the story, driven by the need to understand why we humans suffer. To “see the unseen,” they did not seek to build a special machine to measure the outside world; rather, they turned inwardly, making the

Compass of the Soul
Sikh Dharma International
In the early seventies, Yogi Bhajan (who would later be know as Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji) began to teach in the United States. Through his inspiration, insight, and example many Westerners began adopting the Sikh way of life, attracted by the spiritual practices of Sikh Dharma and its egalitarian teachings that respect all religions. The Sikh religion began in India a little over 530 years ago and since then Sikhs from the Punjab region of India, who make up less than 2 percent of the population of India, have migrated throughout Europe, the Americas, and

Spiritual Awakening in South Africa
South Africa is now 20 years into democracy—not even a generation. The 3HO presence here started with the blessing and directive of the Siri Singh Sahib in the mid-1980s. Since then, the GINI index (universal indicator of disparity between wealthy and disadvantaged) has worsened. The infrastructure and systems of electricity and water supply are deteriorating. At the same time, social conscience and empowerment is awakening and making itself heard, as seen in the recent student revolts. From the yogic side of things, we’re doing KRI Teacher Training Levels I and II. The teaching in South Africa reaches as far as Burundi in

Our History and Mission
The concept of a Sikh ministry was first started by the Third Guru, Guru Amar Das ji, in the mid-1500s. In 1971, in acknowledgement of his extraordinary impact of spreading the universal message of Sikhism through sharing the Sikh teachings with the spiritual seekers in the West, the Akal Takhat bestowed on Harbhajan Singh the title of Siri Singh Sahib, whereupon he was given the responsibility to create a Sikh Dharma Ministry in the West. The Siri Singh Sahib saw it was our destiny to be Sikh Dharma Ministers. Each person has unique gifts that are needed to serve our sangats and communities. The Ministry is like a beautiful

Healing the Master
by SS Sat Kartar Kaur Khalsa, Espanola NM Fall 2012 It was in May 1992, at noontime in Espanola. Siri Singh Sahib Ji had just returned from his travels and was preparing to stay for the summer. He was at the dining table at the Ranch, eating with a few members of the staff, when I returned from doing seva, with mop and rugs in hand. He saw me and invited me to sit and share the lunch. As you can imagine, I was rather overwhelmed! I had only met the Master a few times before, during Tantric or meditation classes,

Secretary of Religion Column (Summer 2012)
The Siri Singh Sahib established the Ministry for our Dharma as a leadership body to serve the sangat and the world. On March 3, 1971, before the Akal Takhat, the Eternal Throne established by Guru Hargobind to serve as the Chief Seat of Religious Authority for Sikhs throughout the world, Yogi Harbhajan Singh was presented with a sword of honor. He was charged with the responsibility to return to the West and establish the Ministry of Sikh Dharma.* According to our Sikh Dharma historian, SS Shanti Kaur Khalsa, the concept of a Sikh Ministry was first started by the Third Guru, Guru

Answering the Call
by SS Guru Amrit Singh Khalsa, Herndon VA Spring 2012 About 10 years ago I was at the fall International Khalsa Council meeting in Espanola, New Mexico. The Siri Singh Sahib was talking about the role of the Khalsa Council and how it is our responsibility to deliver the Dharma to the future. Then he said (and I am sure you know why I am capitalizing this), “WHEN THE CALL COMES, YOU MUST ANSWER!” Right then my cell phone rang. I hustled outside, hit the talk button, and it turned out to be the pastor of a church in Pasadena,

Seeds of Fearlessness & Joy
by MSS Krishna Kaur Khalsa, Los Angeles CA Spring 2012 The Siri Singh Sahib, my beloved teacher, inspired my Ministry, but not in the way I used to think of inspiration. From his example, I long to serve God as he served Him. When I met the Siri Singh Sahib I was coming out of a very confusing period in my life. There was a voice inside that for several years was telling me that I was supposed to help people find a way out of their pain. Not just for a few entertaining hours in the theater, but forever.

Sacrifice the Guilt
by SS Awtar Kaur Khalsa, San Francisco CA Spring 2012 I was a highly-stressed teenager when I got my first chance to speak personally to Siri Singh Sahib Ji. I was ushered to his Solstice tent when I freaked out about my karma yoga assignment. I believed I “should” be willing and able to make the sacrifice to operate the showers during the frigid mountain dawn, but I was not. He was calm and attentive. I was desperate and tense. I felt guilty about not wanting to subject my anorexic body to an hour in a wet swimsuit, and I told him
