In Memoriam – SS Satya Singh Khalsa

December 7, 1949 – August 11, 2025

2025 (Third Quarter)

We bid farewell to Satya Singh, who took his last breath on August 11, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. at home surrounded by his family, chanting the mantra he had requested.

Satya Singh was born on December 7, 1949, in Haarlem, Netherlands. He discovered Kundalini Yoga in the 1970s, moved to the ashram in Amsterdam in 1979, and soon began teaching regularly, at times up to 13 classes a week. He was always a seeker, but, according to him, only found the answers to his questions in yoga, which he had previously failed to find, among other things, in his sociology studies, from which he earned a diploma. After completing his naturopathic training in the Netherlands, Satya Singh moved to the KY Ashram in Hamburg in 1987 with his wife Simran, whom he married in 1984, and immediately opened a yoga studio in the university district.

Thus, he built a steadily growing Kundalini Yoga community, and soon launched the first KY training in Hamburg, which he had conceived together with the founding KY teachers, Tarn Taran Singh & Kaur, and Thomas Hari Jiwan Singh Wesselhöft.

After several studio moves, he and his wife opened the Hoheluft Yoga Center in central Hamburg in 1994. Since then, it has served as the home of the Hamburg teacher training program, where up to 50 yoga teachers have been trained annually.

His two children, Verena and Hargobind, were born in 1990 and 1994, respectively. They are now both parents themselves.

The Kundalini Yoga training program expanded rapidly, and Satya Singh was soon on the road most weekends, teaching for many years in places like Berlin, Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Cologne, Offenburg, Leipzig, and Munich.

He also supported the development of training programs in other European countries and taught there, including Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, France, and the Netherlands. In recent years, he has also taught in China.

Level 2 of the teacher training program was also largely developed under his leadership, and he was an instructor for many decades at all German locations where it was offered.

At the same time, from 1986 to 2018, he directed the programming of the European Yoga Festival in France, which was attended by more than 3,000 participants annually. His dream was to establish a yoga university on the grounds of Chateau Anand, which had been acquired by 3HO Europe.

He published five mantra CDs and authored seven books, including the Kundalini Yoga Handbook, which has become an important standard work in the yoga world and has been translated into several languages. His latest work will be published by Ullstein Verlag in October 2025. One of his passion projects in recent years has been the soul journey he developed. He wrote two books on this topic, held seminars and training courses, and ultimately trained soul journey coaches who can thus continue his work.
