Ram Dass Singh was born in Boise, Idaho, but spent his childhood in the Pacific Northwest. He studied communication at the University of Washington, then began his journey with Kundalini Yoga and Sikh Dharma in 1970. He found what he loved–sadhana and seva.
He spent some time in the Denver and Phoenix ashrams before he set up and led the ashram in Salt Lake City for 16 years. This is where his two loving daughters, Nam Kirn Kaur and Lakshmi Narayan Kaur, were born and where he met and later married his devoted wife, Guru Tera Kaur, in 1987. Last fall, they celebrated their 36th anniversary.
After they moved to Espanola, Ram Dass Singh worked for several years in the Spiritual Names office, helping to send out the requested names along with their meaning. Once he retired, he began doing seva in the Gurdwara. This was something he loved and felt blessed to do. Later in his life he discovered macramé. He made beautiful plant hangars and it brought him great joy to give them away to his dharmic family.
Over the course of his life, Ram Dass Singh taught Kundalini Yoga to many souls and provided a divine example of commitment and devotion. He never missed his morning sadhana, nor his evening sadhana that he later added. During White Tantric Yoga courses, people would often ask him how he held steady throughout the 62 minute exercises. He always replied that it was, “by the Grace of Guru Ram Das.” He had great determination and met each challenge in his life with courage and steadfastness. He was a man of his word with great integrity. A quiet, kind soul, who loved his dharmic family as his own. He had great love for sangat, God, and Guru Ram Das.
He is survived by his wife, Guru Tera Kaur; his daughter Nam Kirn, her son Isaiah and grandson Zayden; and his daughter Lakshmi Narayan and her twin boys, Keegan and Emory.
On July 24, 2023, Ram Dass dictated this note for the sangat.
‘Thank you for being such loving noble souls.
It’s shown me what a great family we are.
We’ve stayed together through thick and thin.
I give everyone my love and my blessings.
Stand firm. It’s worth it.”
