Our children are a gift from God. They choose us as their parents and we have the job to nurture, protect, guide and love them. They do not belong to us. As their first teachers, we have a very important work to accomplish.
We are here to guide them to be great human and spiritual beings and to help them live and fulfill their destiny. The way we teach them is through our example. So much depends on how confident and strong we are, or how mentally and emotionally handicapped we are.
To be a parent is the ultimate responsibility. We have to be completely conscious and aware of their needs, so we can raise them to be conscious beings and great leaders who have a capacity to be compassionate and kind and able to help and elevate others.
Or we can raise them by our commotions and emotions, which will only make them insecure and fearful. It is really a conscious choice every parent needs to understand.
It is not easy to be a parent. Every child is different: we have to have the consciousness, intuition, patience and love to guide each one of them in their unique way. As parents we must understand that our responsibility is to guide them, not control them, to let them grow as spiritual beings.
Guru Bachan Singh and I had to make a decision to keep our children with us or send them to India to study. It was only through our separation from them that we were able to let them become themselves.
The Siri Singh Sahib encouraged us to let them become independent, so that when they were teenagers they would run to us instead of running away from us. Needless to say, this was the biggest challenge in my life as a mother. I learned to let them go. I understood that they did not belong to us, that they were not our possessions.
I realized that everything was God’s will and that I had no control. The only power I had was the power of prayer and I lived with that understanding that the mother’s prayer is the most powerful. Whenever I started worrying, I just went into deep prayer. And I remember what the Siri Singh Sahib once said: “If God gives a woman the blessing of a child, it is the duty of that woman to deliver that child to the path of higher consciousness.”
